Dr. Gregory Altshuler professional biography
His career started at the Leningrad Institute of Fine Mechanics and Optics (presently National Research University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics), one of the most prestigious research and education centers in the former Soviet Union, where he has progressed from MS student to a Professor and Chair of Department of Laser Physics and Biomedical Optics. His major fields of research were nonlinear optics, solid-state laser, picosecond laser, and developing lasers for scientific and space applications. His first biomedical research project started in 1986 and was dedicated to hard tissue laser ablation and development of Er:YAG laser for dentistry.
In 1996, Dr. Altshuler has moved to the U.S. to become Senior Vice President of Research & Development at Palomar Medical Technologies, Inc. in Burlington, Massachusetts. During 20 years of working at Palomar, he led research and development of several crucial new technologies, including the first laser platforms for laser hair removal and fractional laser skin regeneration (jointly with Wellman Center for Photomedicine), selective laser assisted lipolysis, optimized IPL for vascular and pigmented lesions. Overall, he supervised development of 24 new laser and light-based medical products including first multi-application laser and IPL platforms for aesthetic dermatology practices with sale and distribution in more than 70 countries. Dr. Altshuler led development of the first FDA approved home use hair removal diode (jointly with P&G) and wrinkle reduction (jointly with J&J) for consumer markets. Since 2007, Dr. Altshuler consulted Dental Photonics Inc., a company dedicated to the advancement of modern dentistry through a pipeline of novel technologies based on new generation diode lasers, fiber lasers, and diode-pumped solid state lasers and laser fractional technology for regeneration of gingival, alveolar bone and periodontal ligament.
In 2015, Dr. Altshuler has set up and became President of IPG Medical Corporation in Marlboro, Massachusetts - subdivision of IPG Photonics Corporation (NASDAC: IPGP). IPGM has developed new laser platform for urology based on SuperPulse Thulium Fiber Laser. New laser platform was launched in US and Europe with Olympus and in China, India and other countries as IPG brand. SuperPulse Thulium Fiber Laser became the new gold standard for laser lithotripsy and soft tissue surgery replacing Ho:YAG platform. He has published over 220 scientific papers, 6 book chapters and holds 150 patents.
